Studio71 US has partnered with game designer Edmund McMillen, to launch new strategy card game The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls in the US.

The game raised over $2.65MM during its 30-day Kickstarter campaign last year, quickly making it one of the most popular game projects on Kickstarter with approx. 40,000 backers supporting the campaign. The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls game, is inspired by McMillen’s earlier work, ‘The Binding of Isaac,’ an indie roguelike video game released in 2011.

In the game, 2-4 players take turns playing loot cards and using items to kill monsters that yield more items, loot, and sometimes souls. The first player to end their turn with 4 souls is the winner. Cooperation, barter, and betrayal is encouraged.

“Studio71 approached me about doing a Binding of Isaac themed board game,” McMillen said. “Around 9 or 10 months later, I was sick with the flu when the basic structure for a “Binding of Isaac” card game started taking over my brain. Within five days the game started taking shape and we launched it on Kickstarter in June 2018. Designing and kickstarting this game was one of the high points of my career. The success of the Kickstarter was amazing and it feels great to release the game in retail.”

“Binding of Isaac is a great brand and a huge favorite with the gaming community. With the launch of the game at retail, we are taking the next step forward in bringing fans a new experience,” Javon Frazier, Chief Product Officer of Studio71, said. The game is now available on Target.com and all Target stores nationwide.

Edmund McMillen is an independent game designer and artist most known for his work The Binding of Isaac and Super Meat Boy. He has made over 30 award winning games during his 15-year career. The video game and McMillen have been featured the Sundance award-winning film Indie Game: The Movie.

This launch continues Studio71’s reign as a key disruptor in the games industry with some of the most popular games based on pop-culture IP. Besides The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls, the company has also spearheaded successful Kickstarter campaigns for ‘Joking Hazard,’ the second most funded Kickstarter on the platform as well as Shady Agents. Studio71 is currently working on a card game for Umbrella Academy which is launching in 2020.
